Tracking a Route in One of The Largest Straw Bale Mazes in the Country
What comes first to the minds of our Razor Tracking Team, but a Halloween challenge through the maze!
Could we track our route with GPS Fleet Tracking and find a way out, safely and securely through all the dead ends and sharp turns? Our Phil Steichen takes us along his spooky journey at the GreatStrawMaze, outfitted with an Elite Dash Camera and a Pro Tracker.
It’s the adventure of a lifetime as the Great Straw Bale Maze and Pumpkin Patch was designed and built at the West Acres Mall, in Fargo, North Dakota, from August 30 to November 3, 2024.
People could navigate their way through the towering 8-foot-tall straw bales, twists and turns through the maze’s intricate paths, and embark on a quest to find a way out of the maze.
Watch the video for the journey:
So the Great Straw Maze is a life size maze, eight feet tall, about an acre in size. It’s a challenge for all ages. We’ve had newborns to 90-year-olds through here. It took us about two weeks to construct the whole maze. There’s 1,421 eight-foot-long bales each weigh about 1,000 pounds.

I’m going to be my own vehicle today. So I’m going to walk the maze with the Elite Dash Camera as well as the GPS Pro Tracker Device. So the Elite Camera will not only record the tracking, but also the video of my twisting and turning.

The most important thing I can tell you, is that it’s a true maze. It’s a very unique experience. There’s only a few strawbale mazes, actually, in the whole country.

I’m always hoping for the best, for speed. I’m always pumped. I love mazes, I love puzzles. I’m ready to take this on.
I’m going two miles an hour. I’m always scared, like I said. But I’m not lost yet. We’re in a blind corner. We missed the turn. You know what in mazes, you’ll always just turn left and you know you’ll always get out. I can’t tell if this is an exterior wall, though. No, that’s a dead end too Yeah, we’ve got to go back further.
Got to do landmarks. So that’s a dead end. We got to back track further. Kathy did a really good job with this maze. Just turn left, always turn left and right, then left, then right. Looking for a turn to get us out into that side. So I know I’m in a good spot, because this is the only way to get on the north side of the bales.
Yeah, that’s the way we came. Are you feeling lost? No, not too bad. I’m feel confident still. It’s just confidence and ability. Have a fine meeting point.
Look at that! I have my map for the Pro tracker. You have my circles. So when I was lost, the mapping kept up with me where I stopped and had to take a little break because I was lost so bad. So even if when you’re lost, you’re not lost. With the Elite Dash Camera, it’s kind of nice seeing the twists and turns visually, while I was completing the maze.

Pretty much almost everybody says that was way harder than I thought it was going to be. The challenges are real. Everybody goes in with an emergency map just in case they get lost. And my phone number and I get calls every day to come rescue people from in the middle of the maze.
When you come out of the maze, there’s all sorts of kid games to play. There’s all sorts of beautiful photo opportunities. So bring your cameras and, take your fall family photos. There are beautiful pumpkins. I grow 20 acres of pumpkins on my small family farm, and they’re all here on sale.
